Why Singing Works: The Science Behind the Song

Oxford University Research

Researchers at Oxford University have demonstrated with compelling data that singing groups bond faster than participants in creative writing or craft classes. The social power of shared song is not simply anecdotal — it is evidence-based and measurable.

Singing together improves self-esteem, boosts mood, and fosters stronger, more trusting relationships between group members — outcomes that translate directly into healthier, more cohesive workplaces.

  • Faster Bonding.
Singing groups form meaningful social connections more quickly than other group activities.
  • Boosted Mood.
Regular group singing raises endorphin and oxytocin levels, improving emotional wellbeing.
  • Improved self-esteem and mental wellbeing.
Participants consistently report greater confidence and a stronger sense of belonging.

Workshops for Healthcare Professionals

Singing is a great icebreaker — and in the context of healthcare, where teams work under significant pressure, it offers something genuinely valuable. In workshops led by Singing4Health, colleagues discover each other in a different context, away from clinical hierarchies and everyday stress.

One of the most striking observations from leading choirs in workplaces is how levelling the experience is. Inside the choir, everyone is at the same level of involvement. The responsibility of leading is passed entirely to the director — offering real relief to those who usually carry that weight. For everyone, it becomes a way to understand each other better as human beings, not just as colleagues.

Singing4Health collaborated with Heritage2Health at Kingston University from 2013, delivering sessions for Student Nurses from Kingston University’s School of Social Care and Education, alongside vulnerable service users, bringing communities together through song.

Supporting Teams: Five Years and Madrid’s Airport

In 2007 a group of air traffic controllers at Madrid-Barajas Airport decided they wanted to create a choir in the Air Control Tower. It would help to release stress, as well as giving a cultural activity inside the workplace during free time. They looked for a choir director, and as a consequence, I visited the air traffic control tower every week for the next five years, until I loved to the UK in 2012!

We worked with theatre, movement, breathing exercises, and song writing was encouraged. They became a strong group able to perform their own covers of songs they liked, with new lyrics that would speak about themselves and work.

The styles and songs are being chosen according to the musical taste of the group, and every session contains breathing exercises, playful activities, physical activities and relaxation activities.

Inclusive By Design

One of the most important principles at Singing4Health is that everyone belongs,  including those who do not consider themselves singers. Workshops are designed so that every individual can find a way to contribute that feels comfortable and meaningful to them.

for the singers

Guided vocal work, harmonies, and the joy of making music together with colleagues.

for the non-singers

Creative songwriting sessions welcome contributions through ideas, lyrics, rhythm, or simply being present in the group.

for leaders

An opportunity to step back, be guided, and experience the relief of shared responsibility.

for the team

A shared experience that builds lasting bonds, mutual understanding, and a stronger sense of community.
