I founded Singing4Health in 2013 as a Community Interest Company, bringing together over a decade of professional experience in singing, choir leading and music education with a growing body of knowledge in public health and community wellbeing.

The practice is rooted in a body-mind approach to voice that I have carried since my early training. I was fortunate to study with some remarkable teachers — among them Evelyn Tubb, the early music soprano and educator who believed in my work and supported me in coming to London, and Jessica Cash, one of the most respected voice teachers of her generation, whose students included Dame Emma Kirkby and Evelyn Tubb herself. Jessica’s approach was deeply psychological, drawing on kinesiology and the understanding that the voice cannot be separated from the whole person — body, mind and emotional life.

That understanding became the foundation of everything Singing4Health does. From the beginning, the aim was to use singing as a tool for health, connection and self-expression — accessible to everyone, whatever their experience or ability.

I work with a wide range of  singing formats

community choirs, health and wellbeing workshops, mindful singing sessions, and facilitated group singing for specific communities and settings. My approach is always shaped by the needs of the group, with a focus on inclusion, wellbeing and the enjoyment of singing together.

One strand of my practice is Primal Singing Integrative — an approach to singing that prioritises expression over words. Some participants call it “singing without words.” You can read about it in Living Song (Peter Lang, 2021), a volume on Music, Spirituality and Wellbeing to which I contributed a chapter.

I have been working at the intersection of music, voice and wellbeing for over 25 years — as a performer, choir leader, educator and community practitioner. My work spans healthcare settings, community organisations, schools, universities and arts institutions across the UK and Spain.

Before founding Singing4Health I spent over a decade teaching and leading choirs in Spain — including heading the Children’s Studies department at Escuela de Música Creativa in Madrid, the largest modern music school in the city, where I led a team of 22 teachers and worked with over 300 families.

After founding Singing4Health I built the practice across London and the South East, delivering programmes for NHS trusts, hospitals, charities and community organisations. One of the highlights of that period was conducting Positive Voices — one of the first choirs for people living with HIV in the UK, which later became the Bloomsbury Choir.

In 2020 I joined the British Red Cross as a Community Connector and Social Prescriber within an NHS Primary Care Network — working at the height of the pandemic to build referral pathways, engage marginalised communities, and create new groups for young people.

I have delivered training for music teachers, lectured at Kingston University Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education, and am a Steering Committee Member of the Music, Spirituality and Wellbeing International Network, working alongside the Reverend Professor June Boyce-Tillman.

Qualifications

I hold a Certificate in Counselling Skills, Mental Health First Aid training, and public health training with the Royal Society for Public Health, of which I am an Associate Member. I also hold a Professional Diploma in Singing from Conservatorio Teresa Berganza, Madrid, and am a member of the Singing for Health Network.

I hold specialist training in singing for Parkinson’s, COPD, dementia, lung health, and facilitation in mental health and prison settings.
